How NOT to rate players 101

Hi class, welcome to "How not to rate players 101".

I just saw that the Insider edited Shaquille O'Neal. Let's analyze the changes, shall we?

Overall 77 (-4)
Inside 92 (-3)
Post Shot 84 (-7)
OffReb 70 (-12)
DefReb 74 (-9)
PostOff 87 (-6)
PostDef 77 (-2)
OffAwr 83 (-10)
DefAwr 62 (-2)
Quickness 30 (-6)

It shouldn't be lost on anyone that all of these are decreases.

Shaq's rebound ratings worsened on both offense and defense. I can understand offense since he is posting the worst offensive rebounding production of his career, but why on defense WHERE HE IS POSTING THE BEST PRODUCTION OF HIS CAREER?

Rating and DRB%
77 Varejao (23.0)
77 Ilgauskas (19.1)
74 Shaq (26.8)
71 LeBron (18.3)

In what universe does this make senes? You don't have to raise his rating, but you can very easily just leave him AS IS, since he OBVIOUSLY didn't get worse at it. Shaq is very obviously a better rebounder than Ilgauskas on the defensive end and always has been. Clearly the Insider is just editing players to get them to a certain overall rating, and is too lazy to verify whether his changes are warranted. Perhaps he should have started with Shaq's 63 FT rating since Shaq is shooting 44% on the year, is a notoriously bad FT shooter, and his career high of .622 came BACK IN 2003. But maybe that's just me.

Shaq is 31-66 (.464) on non-dunk Inside shots, so a 92 is still pretty damn high. He never should have been 95 in the first place, as said before, this ain't 2003.

Shaq still has better handle ratings than most power forwards. Hakim Warrick has a 48 for christ's sake. Shaq has better handle ratings than Joakim Noah (45), Antonio McDyess (43), Carl Landry (40), and Nene (40), just to name a few.

Shaq's shot blocking is improved and he stayed the same. Gerald Wallace's got worse and he went up. Just more proof they didn't want to raise Shaq's rating but couldn't figure out how to accurately lower it.

Here's what I changed on Shaq to get him to a 77.

First number is my rating, 2nd number is 2K's, 3rd number is the default rating if applicable.

Lawrence Frank out as Nets coach

The Nets are 0-16 and I'm still in shock about this. Frank has gotten more out of the Nets the last few years than anyone thought possible. Under his watch the Nets have exceeded expectations every season, making the playoffs, advancing to the second round, even winning 34 games last season, when they were supposed to win 24.

Every season management has jettisoned someone from Frank's core. Jason Kidd was traded for Devin Harris, and Harris became an all-star under Frank. Richard Jefferson was salary dumped for Yi Jianlian. Vince Carter was salary dumped for Courtney Lee. Imagine being in Frank's position, driving a nice car and then having someone taking a wheel off every season.

Of course, they haven't "exceeded" expectations this year, but that is hardly Frank's fault. The team has been decimated by injuries, and they were already projected to be the worst team in the east this season. They are all of three games behind the Knicks, and the team wasn't supposed to be much better than that.

Starters Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Chris-Douglas Roberts, and Yi Jianlian have missed a combined 32 games of a possible 64. Lead reserves Keyon Dooling, Jarvis Hayes, and Tony Battie have been out with injuries. Trenton Hassell and Josh Boone have combined to start 20 games. The Nets have gotten 19 games out of the players they traded Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson for. How many games do you think they'd have won if all three of those players had gotten hurt?

And yet, the Nets were still competing. They had the 10th best DRTG (pts allowed per 100 possessions) in the league. They were the worst offensive team, but that was sure to improve once the team got healthy. That's what happens when a team is forced to start Trenton Hassell and Josh Boone. You can't squeeze blood from a stone.

Perhaps the Nets felt mercy on Frank and didn't want his legacy marred by setting the NBA's futility mark of 0-18 (they will surely tie the 0-17 mark against the Lakers tonight). However without Frank the Nets are more likely to to set the NBA's all-time futility mark of 9-73.

Going forward, it's possible the Nets want to pursue a bigger name coach to attract 2010 free agent talent. They certainly aren't going to attract LeBron anymore with all those losses. Ironically enough, Frank joins Byron Scott on the unemployment line. Scott was fired by the Nets for similar reasons as Frank, so it is possible that the Nets have "the next Lawrence Frank" lined up to replace Lawrence Frank. Frank should be able to land another coaching gig with relative ease, as Scott did. I would certainly take him over Mike D'Antoni in New York.

SRS Power Rankings 11/23/09

EAST
Hawks 7.77
Celtics 6.40 (Faltering a bit after strong start, but still among league's elite)
Magic 4.20 (Got back Lewis but lost Nelson to injury... will they ever have a full roster?)
Cavaliers 1.53
Bucks 1.48 (Are they that good, or is the rest of the east just that bad? It's the latter, as they were in 9th last week but only went up 0.36)
Heat 0.74 (Falling hard back to mediocrity after ranking 3rd last week)
Raptors -0.26
Pistons -0.97
Bulls -2.15
Pacers -2.88 (losing to the Knicks will do that.)
Bobcats -4.19
Wizards -4.34 (Weren't they supposed to be a playoff team with Arenas?)
Sixers -6.58
Knicks -7.52 (Actually playing well over thier last three games)
Nets -11.87 (Starting to get healthy with Harris back and Lee on the horizon).

WEST
Lakers 6.96 (Gasol returns and they're on top after two games. Don't expect that to change.)
Nuggets 6.26
Blazers 6.00
Mavericks 5.98
Rockets 4.90
Suns 4.05
Spurs 3.88
Thunder 3.47
Jazz 1.73 (West's 9th best team would be 4th in the east. What else is new?)
Kings -0.28 (Would be the 8th best team in the east)
Hornets -1.12 (Winning games without Chris Paul, at least confirming Byron Scott didn't have the team playing as good as they should have. Playing Bobby Brown & Morris Peterson over Darren Collison & Marcus Thornton did him in.)
Warriors -2.90
Clippers -3.69
Grizzlies -6.33
Wolves -13.50 (Haven't won since barely beating Nets on opening night. They have a better chance of setting the league's futility record for lowest wins in a season. Nets are 30th in offense and 12th in defense. Wolves are 29th in offense and 24th in defense.)

Why the Hawks are the league's best

The Hawks are a league best 11-3 with a league best 7.72 SRS at press time. Yet the only player the 2K Insider has really bothered to edit is Joe Johnson. Let's examine what the real story is behind the Hawks surge.

2010
ORTG: 112.8 (4th)
DRTG: 105.7 (16th)
PACE: 92.8 (16th)

2009
ORTG: 109.3 (10th)
DRTG: 107.6 (12th)
PACE: 89.6 (24th)

The Hawks have been running more, which is making them more efficient on the offensive end. It starts with their frontline of Josh Smith and Al Horford (more on that in a bit). Their defense has slipped a bit, as it would for any team that brought in Jamal Crawford (who at least contributes to that improved offense).

Smoove and Horford have combined for 43 dunks which is 2nd best of any duo in the league (trailing Melo and Nene's 47). I compiled their career "Inside" statistics using NBA Hotspots.

Josh Smith
2009: 303-502 (.604)
2008: 381-646 (.590)
2007: 306-540 (.567)
2006: 189-355 (.532)
2005: 206-367 (.561)
Total: 1385-2410 (.574)

Al Horford
2009: 190-309 (.615)
2008: 223-387 (.576)
Total: 413-696 (.593)

How have they fared in 2010?
Smith: 79-123 (.642)
Horford: 60-87 (.690)

This is a huge leap in efficiency, and in Smith's case it is magnified by the fact that he has stopped taking three pointers altogether. Take away their dunks and they are still finishing very efficiently.

Inside (Non-Dunks)
Smith: 57-101 (.564)
Horford: 39-66 (.590)

Smith in particular has raised his game and according to Dave Berri he's been worth as much as "Superman" Dwight Howard. Check out Berri's blog "The Wages of Wins Journal" when you're done here, as he illustrates Smith's improvements much better than I can (or at least am willing to at present time!).
http://dberri.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/the-story-of-the-2009-10-season-might-just-be-happening-in-atlanta/

As I said earlier, the 2K Insider hasn't given either of these two a lick of credit and has instead continued deferring to Joe Johnson. Here are Johnson's shot ratings from the latest update.

Inside 89
Close 84
Med 88
3pt 81

Let's look at each of these one at a time.

INSIDE
2009: 237-421 (.563)
2008: 230-426 (.540)
2007: 202-357 (.566)
2006: 284-501 (.567)
2005: 160-295 (.542)
Total: 1113-2000 (.556)

Johnson is only 56-107 (.523) to start the season. JJ is not off to a great start but it's still a bit early to be tanking his rating. Let's see how he holds up next to Kobe.

Kobe Bryant
2009: 291-468 (.622)
2008: 320-513 (.624)
2007: 293-502 (.583)
2006: 321-554 (.579)
2005: 266-469 (.567)
Total: 1491-2506 (.594)

Let's take out their dunks since there's a discrepencie between the two (Kobe had 59 while Johnson a mere 8... which is also a reason his dunk rating should be knocked down a peg).

2009 Inside Non-Dunk
Kobe: 232-409 (.567)
JJ: 229-413 (.554)

Only a .13 difference in similar attempts. Kobe is rated 90, while JJ is 89, so that seems fair. JJ would be a bonafide superstar if he had Kobe's athleticism, but hey, so would a lot of people. On to close rating...

CLOSE
2009: 115-270 (.425)
2008: 111-253 (.438)
2007: 74-145 (.510)
2006: 100-239 (.418)
2005: 98-208 (.471)
Total: 498-1115 (.446)

Johnson is 19-43 (.441) to start the season.

Kobe Bryant
2009: 174-397 (.438)
2008: 120-270 (.444)
2007: 143-293 (.488)
2006: 174-383 (.454)
2005: 75-205 (.365)
Total: 687-1548 (.443)

The crux of my whole "Joe Johnson is overrated from mid-range" argument is that JJ's mid-range game is actually his "Close" game. He is among the best SGs in the league and as evidenced by his keeping pace with Kobe albeit in fewer attempts. Of course, Kobe is 42-85 to start the year (.494) but it's also been well documented that Kobe worked on his post game over the summer.

Johnson and Kobe were rated 84 and 92 respectively entering the year (Kobe obviously gets a bump but that's another topic). I don't think one can justify an 8 point gap given their statistical similarity (though Kobe was def better over the last two years). Without flooding this post with data on every SG, I'd say JJ is maybe about 2-3 pts underrated here. Let's move on to mid-range.

MEDIUM
2009: 110-299 (.367)
2008: 139-377 (.368)
2007: 142-326 (.435)
2006: 120-295 (.406)
2005: 110-307 (.358)
Total: 621-1604 (.387)

Johnson's Med started off at 72 which was pretty much deserved given his showing over the last two seasons. The Insider then boosted this to an 83 because the common fan complained that JJ's "amazing" mid-range game was being mis-represented. JJ's numbers are worse than Andre Iguodala's and I don't hear anyone calling him an amazing mid-range player. The 2K Insider then boosted JJ's med to an 88 in the latest update!

Johnson is 24-54 (.444) from mid-range this season. That's a pretty damn small sample size to be giving the dude a mid-range rating only two points worse than Kobe.

Kobe Bryant
2009: 217-512 (.423)
2008: 185-492 (.376)
2007: 240-564 (.425)
2006: 302-717 (.421)
2005: 102-264 (.386)
Total: 1046-2549 (.410)

On top of the huge percentage advantage, Kobe averages about 100 more makes per year than JJ.

This season Kobe is only 27-80 (.337) from mid-range, but you don't see anyone rushing to tank his mid-range rating, do you? So why the double standard?

Brandon Jennings is 27-58 (.465) and the Insider gave him 86 med. If we're gonna go by the JJ scale Jennings should be in the 90s.

LeBron James is 40-86 (.465) and he's only an 81 med. Guess he should be in the 90s too if we're going by the JJ scale.

I could go on for awhile, but I think you all get the point. It's incredibly early to be giving Johnson such a high rating, and at best he shouldn't be anything more than upper 70s until he shows he's for real.

All in all it's a bit embarrassing that JJ's getting such a huge boost for what amounts to a much smaller sample size than Smith or Horford's improvements on the interior.

I'd like to transition this to defense really quickly (and I do so, seamlessly!). This is an area the Hawks have slipped in despite the return of Josh Smith's elite shot blocking. I tenatively blamed this on Jamal Crawford, but the truth is he's also been paired with Mike Bibby (another weak defensive guard) and Joe Johnson (an average defensive guard with a lot of hype).

Let's check out the Hawks 2010 DRTG and see whose been the most effective.

Defensive Rating (Pts allowed per 100 possessions)
Josh Smith 98
Horford 102

Teague 103
Pachulia 106
Joe Smith 106
Williams 108
Evans 108
Johnson 109
Crawford 109
Bibby 109

Well, that wasn't exactly surprising. The team average was 105.7, which effectively means Smith and Horford are carrying the defense on their back, and that the Hawks would be an elite defensive team if they didn't have such a sub-par backcourt.

Here's 2009 to see if there's any major changes.
Horford 104
Smith 104

Pachulia 106
Williams 108
Bibby 109
Murray 109
Johnson 110

Evans 110

Pretty consistent, as Crawford essentially replaced Murray. Smith has indeed improved substantially, but this seems to confirm the Hawks will be nothing more than average defensively due to their backcourt.

Johnson gets a lot of defensive credit and he seems to be a decent man to man defender, but he doesn't force many turnovers, is a poor rebounder for his size, and his defensive effort just isn't consistent when you factor in his heavy workload and energy spent on the offensive end.

Unfortunately, that doesn't spell great things come playoff time, where poor defensive teams get exposed. They needed 7 games to put Dwyane Wade away, and got swept by LeBron in round two. They're a better team thanks to their offensive improvement, but they're going to need an upgrade on defense if they're going to take the next step and become true contenders.

Real 2K Insider [11-16-09]

I've been really busy this week, here are where the ratings currently stand. Any unlisted players means I haven't edited them yet.

The number on the right is the difference between my rating and 2K's current rating. Brandon Jennings is +5 over 2K's rating, but he's also +18 from from the defaults.

My E-Mail to David Aldridge

I was reading David Aldridge's column today on NBA.com and he talked about fothe foul out debate that's been picking up steam over the last few years. Jeff Van Gundy has brought this up on TV before so I figured now would be as good as any to get my two cents in. You can view Aldridge's article here, and my email below. I'll let you know if I get a response.

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/david_aldridge/11/16/morning.tip/index.html

Here's my take on the foul limits.

Star players already get benefit from the refs. It's not star players who are penalized - it's big men.

Against the Knicks on Weds, Danny Granger picked up two quick fouls but stayed on the court to drop 30 points in the first half. He didn't pick up his 3rd foul until late in the 3rd quarter. Granger stuck on a weak perimeter player (Gallinari). The league's stars know how to play with foul trouble.

Dwight Howard and Greg Oden spend nights in foul trouble because they attempt to block so many shots. Aggressive defense leads to fouling. Joel Pryzbilla was forced to cut his block attempts the last two years to reduce his fouling.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/przybjo01.html

Pryzbilla Block%
2006: 7.1
2007: 7.6
2008: 4.0
2009: 3.9
2010: 5.9 (8th in lg)

Greg Oden is blocking 7.6% of shots this season (1st in lg) compared to only 4.2 last season

Oden and Przybilla combine for 7.5 fouls per game, but they also combine for 3.9 blocks per game. The Blazers allow only 98.7 points per 100 possessions, which is 2nd in the league trailing only the Celtics. Imagine if they no longer had to worry about fouling out? It would be a return to the thuggery of the 80s where the way to beat guys like Jordan was to put them on their ass anytime they ventured into the paint.

Penalties would also overcomplicate the game. Good luck explaining them to a casual fan. Nobody was a fan of illegal defense rules which is why they were scrapped. Many players commit their sixth foul in the waning seconds of a game when intentionally fouling an opponent to play the FT game. Does either team really need penalty FTs in that situation? At that point players should be worried about stopping the clock, whereas a player with 5 fouls would not be able to foul because he would be hurting his team even more.

What the game needs to do is fix the rules so perimeter players don't have a free lane into the paint. We both know the defensive rules are a joke nowadays. They have led to an increase in scoring and instead of having one 30 point scorer (Jordan) we have five (Kobe, James, Wade, Melo, and even Paul). The league obviously feels sports center dunks and artificial star players are what the fans want to see, and they're right. I'm not so sure we need another reason to increase FT attempts league wide, which is what any penalties would create.

Rashidi vs 2K: Top 30 PGs

Top 30 PGs: Rashidi vs 2K

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last month it was top 20, and there have obviously been revisions since then (Jennings, for instance). I've edited 52 of the 86 active PGs so far. As far as other positions go I am very close to doing a top 20 PFs and top 30 Cs.

So without much further ado, here are 2K's top 30 PGs. My PGs are listed below, with the difference in parenthasize. Major differences will be in bold.

For those wondering at home, Blake and Fisher don't crack my top 30 (as they are among the worst starting points in the league). I have them at 70 and 67 respectively. 2K has the audacity to rate a walking corpse like Fisher over actual difference makers like Lou and Bynum.

Couple quick explanations....

I have Kirk Hinrich listed at SG (where he has mostly played since Rose came to town, and especialy now that Gordon was replaced by Pargo). 2K has him at 78 while I have him at 76. Switching him to SG causes his overall to jump 2 points, so 2K would have him at 80 (tied w/ Rose for team lead) and I have him at 78.

Arenas is shooting 39% from the field and steals/rebounds are down. 2K hasn't changed Arenas' rating since his injury two years ago, so a 2 point drop should have been expected.

Davis is also shooting 39%, but he also plays solid defense which has kept his rating up.

Jennings is clearly better than a guy like Mo Williams or Aaron Brooks, and he's only 20 years old. He's pretty clearly better than Derrick Rose who 2K has at an 80. Jennings is looking like a sleeper for the all-star team given how weak the east PGs are.

I'd love to raise Nash but the dude has 1 steal in 12 games. 1 steal in 397 minutes. That just drags him down so much.

Don't ask me why 2K has Kidd rated like it's 2007. Remember last year when they had him rated higher than Dirk?

Would someone mind letting 2K know that Bibby is the 4th best Hawk, not 2nd?

For those keeping track at home, yeah, 2K really does have Nate Robinson only two points below Nash and a point ahead of Mo Williams.

Will Bynum averaged 18.4 pts and 7.0 ast per 36 mins last season, which is why the Pistons didnt miss Iverson one bit when he faked his injury. He's averaging 18.9 and 5.5 per 36 this year, proving that was no fluke.

Lou Williams worse than Chris Duhon, really?

82games = Misleading stats

I haven't used 82games.com for statistical reference in a few years now, and this is one of the reasons why.

http://www.82games.com/0910/09DET4.HTM#bypos

According to them, Rodney Stuckey is the Pistons' starting SG, and Ben Gordon is the starting PG.

http://www.82games.com/0910/09NYK6.HTM#bypos

They also list Jared Jeffries as a SF/SG when the dude hasn't played a minute outside of PF this season. They honestly think Wilson Chandler is a PF in Jeffries' lineups, or that Gallinari is a SG when all three are on the floor.

This matters because they are logging defensive stats by position, meaning the wrong data is being assigned to the wrong players. Now that "advanced statistics" are en vogue, I have seen many a blogger write entire articles based upon incorrect statistics that they view as infallible.

Such as this one...

http://www.knickerblogger.net/2479/knicks-2010-season-preview-part-3.html

The fact is there is no explanation by 82games on the methodology and reasoning behind the stats they collect, and because basketball fans have few other sources we look the other way and are forced to put blind faith into something we know little about.

Right now on ESPN the Mavs are playing the Spurs. Kidd is on the floor with Beaubois. Kidd is being guarded by Richard Jefferson, while Beaubois is guarded by George Hill. Does that mean Kidd is the SG? Or is Richard Jefferson the PG?

I have emailed site owner Roland Beech about the incorrect position data (last season and this season) and have yet to get a response. If you would like to leave your own message asking for some type of explanation, you can do so here:

SRS Power Rankings 11/16/09

I'll be releasing a roster update later tonight. Until then, here are the new SRS rankings...

EAST
Hawks 8.74 (Don't look now but the balanced Hawks are the top team in the east)
Celtics 7.97 (Age rears it's ugly head... Pierce played hurt vs Indy and it cost them)
Heat 4.93 (So far so good... but I don't expect them to fare well once injuries hit)
Cavaliers 3.74 (Ben Wallace was quite underrated it seems)
Pacers 2.93 (Dahntay Jones lead the way in shocking Boston)
Magic 2.74 (Rashard Lewis returns this week)
Pistons 1.28 (Injuries starting to take their toll)
Raptors 1.13 (League's best offense still held down by league's worst defense)
Bucks 1.12 (Jennings is the real deal, but an easy schedule has contributed heavily to Redd-less success... they will fight for the 8th seed which is better than most predicted)
Bulls -1.24 (Lacking offensive firepower, which we all knew was coming when Jannero Pargo replaced Ben Gordon)
Wizards -2.00 (Jamison returns soon, but will he be enough?)
Bobcats -5.06 (They're the best of the bad. That's all I can really think of.)
Sixers -6.89 (Just lost Marreese Speights which is very bad news)
Knicks -9.69 (It can't get much worse... until you consider team has been relatively healthy, so they CAN get much worse...)
Nets -11.23 (See above, except the Nets actually are all hurt)

WEST
Blazers 7.15 (Mix a healthy Oden with last year's top offenese and we have a winner).
Nuggets 6.34 (Big win against the Lakers this week)
Mavericks 6.09 (Josh Howard down with injury again)
Rockets 4.97 (Just imagine how good they'd be with a healthy Yao & T-Mac)
Lakers 4.00 (Losses to the Nuggets and Rockets re-affirm that this team needs Pau Gasol if it's to stay on top)
Thunder 3.79 (Losing to the Clippers has to be maddening a night after beating the Spurs)
Spurs 3.57 (Team is weak defensively beyond Duncan, whose mins will be limited all year)
Suns 2.56 (Blowout loss to a Gasol-less Laker team reaffirms what I said last week)
Kings 0.29 (Paul Westphal = COTY right now IMO)
Jazz -0.18 (Injuries continue to mount)
Clippers -4.19 (Still trying to hang on til Griffin returns)
Hornets -4.49 (Just lost Chris Paul for a month, which is likely the season's dagger)
Warriors -4.78 (Just gave up 55 to a rookie PG)
Grizzlies -8.80 (Still can't defend for anything...)
Wolves -13.20 (Worst team in the league by far, especially when you consider how banged up New Jersey is... Wolves are only missing Kevin Love.)

Fun with NBA Hotspots

Hotspot stats are now available for the 2010 season at nba.com/hotspots

Can you find any interesting comparisons?

Here's my favorite so far

Chris Duhon
Inside: 9-23 (.391)
Close: 0-4 (.000)
Med: 0-8 (.000)

Toney Douglas
Inside: 11-13 (.846)
Close: 2-6 (.333)
Med: 7-15 (.466)

Duhon is 9-35 on 2pters. BENCH HIM ALREADY!

Rajon Rondo
Inside: 38-52 (.731)
Close: 3-7 (.428)
Med: 7-19 (.368)

For all the *****ing people do about Rondo's mid-range rating, he's once again showing HE CAN HIT THE SHOT. How does he stack up against the rest of his team so far?

Garnett: 20-46
Allen: 13-27
House: 7-18
Rondo: 7-19
Pierce: 6-14
Daniels: 2-3
Williams: 2-6
Hudson: 1-1
Scalabrine: 1-2
Perkins: 1-4
Sheed: 1-5
Giddens: 0-1

I can't say it enough - Rondo is a much better mid-range player than Dan Gadzuric and every other player with a 66 mid-range rating. You can scream up and down all you want about how "easy" his shots are but the fact is the mid-range shots he takes are far tougher than Dan Gadzuric's. Stop playing fools.

Gadzuric hasn't even attempted a mid-range shot yet this year, only taking two of his 17 shots outside of 5 feet. This is the player Rondo is apparently as bad as.

SRS Update

In case you missed the last one... SRS (Simple Rating System) measures teams by point differential and schedule strength. Zero is the average.

EAST
Celtics 10.29 (will chase the bulls 72-10 record)
Heat 7.69 (much improved thanks to their defense)
Hawks 6.11 (quietly pushing for the 2nd or 3rd seed)
Magic 3.41 (short handed but still pretty good)
Cavs 1.73 (their offense is a mess)
Bulls -0.36 (much improved defensively)
Bucks -0.43 (the top defensive team so far)
Pistons -0.75 (no Rip or Prince means making the playoffs will be a fight)
Raptors -1.33 (Their offense is talk of the town, but their defense is catastrophic)
Pacers -1.49 (looking like a carbon copy of last season)
Wizards -2.11 (the return of Arenas a bit overstated)
Bobcats -3.82 (when your top scorer is averaging 14 ppg and shooting 32%, you stink)
Sixers -4.48 (poor defensively, despite iguodala, brand, and dalembert)
Knicks -9.21 (they're so bad they're making larry hughes look good)
Nets -12.71 (half the team is hurt)

WEST
Mavericks 9.01 (the best in the west until Pau Gasol is healthy)
Blazers 7.51 (chemistry issues? says who?)
Lakers 6.87 (5th in the league minus their 2nd best player)
Thunder 6.07 (great defense making up for durant vs the world on the other end)
Rockets 5.03 (defense seems to be a recurring theme among winning teams)
Nuggets 4.10 (pretty good considering Anthony Carter's been starting at SG)
Suns 4.04 (don't be fooled by their record. they've had an easy schedule.)
Spurs 1.94 (is it really that hard to surround Tim Duncan with defensive players?)
Jazz -1.13 (could miss the playoffs if they don't right the ship)
Kings -1.28 (nobody thought they'd be this good. nobody.)
Hornets -1.77 (Chris Paul vs the world will not get them to the playoffs)
Clippers -4.48 (trying to hang until Griffin returns)
Warriors -5.65 (No Biedrins/Turiaf means Mikki Moore starts at center on an undersized team)
Grizzlies -8.88 (no Iverson means no bench. problem for a starless lineup.)
Wolves -13.34 (30 point blowout to the Warriors says it all.)

A quick comparison to my team ratings should tell us which teams should go up or down.

+/- is the differential between my rating and 2K's rating, including any roster updates

Lester Hudson, Rodrigue Beaubois, and Brian Cook were added by 2K so I took their ratings and applied them to my CAPs (so their +/- is from 2K's version). I forgot Dante Cunningham was a missing player so I'll have his official ratings with my changes in the next update.

Michael Jordan 1996-98

I finally decided to make my own Jordan CAP this year, and uploaded it to the 360 server. DOWNLOAD IT NOW! I probably have the most accurate ratings for Jordan (I.E. not 99 in every category) as let's not forget this is age 32-34 (post-prime) and he wasn't the elite athlete of his younger days.

Simple Rating System (SRS)

A team rating that takes into account average point differential and strength of schedule. The rating is denominated in points above/below average, where zero is average.

2009's top five
8.68 Cavaliers (66-16)
7.44 Celtics
7.11 Lakers
6.49 Magic
5.00 Blazers

2008's top five
9.31 Celtics (66-16)
7.34 Lakers
6.87 Jazz
6.67 Pistons
5.46 Hornets

1996's top five
11.80 Bulls (72-10)
7.39 Sonics
6.24 Jazz
5.98 Spurs
5.40 Magic

Why am I bringing up this rating? I figure it'd be interesting to see where the teams rank after only a week.

2010 Eastern Conference
16.48 Celtics (6-0)
8.01 Magic
6.36 Cavaliers
5.16 Heat
4.86 Hawks
2.23 Raptors
1.52 Wizards
-0.27 Bulls
-0.34 Pistons
-1.79 Sixers
-2.13 Bucks
-5.84 Pacers
-8.16 Bobcats
-11.52 Knicks
-12.95 Nets

2010 Western Conference
8.14 Nuggets
6.41 Spurs
5.16 Blazers
2.92 Suns
2.72 Rockets
2.33 Thunder
1.99 Lakers (4-1)
1.77 Mavericks
-2.99 Hornets
-4.27 Wolves
-4.53 Jazz
-6.14 Clippers
-6.16 Warriors
-6.50 Kings
-9.13 Grizzlies

The Celtics are destroying opponents and going by SRS it looks like they can legitimately challenge the Bulls 72 wins, as Rasheed Wallace predicted.

The Lakers on the other hand, have to be considered VERY fortunate to be 4-1. They have gone to OT their last two games against mediocre opponents, while also dropping a game to the Mavericks. They could very easily be 2-3 had a few things gone differently (or if the schedule were tougher). They are currently playing without Pau Gasol, which is obviously the reason for their struggles. It is very doubtful the Lakers will be able to keep winning without Gasol, and the sooner they get him back, the more likely they are to win the conference.

All in all, these rankings are actually pretty spot on regarding the team talent and where we'd expect them to finish. If I were told the east rankings were end of the season numbers, I'd believe it. The west is a little more topsy turvy, as aside from the Gasol-less Lakers, the Thunder & Rockets are surprising teams, while the Jazz are off to yet another slow start. The Grizzlies have the 3rd worst SRS despite all that offensive talent... they are dead last in Defensive Rating allowing 117.7 pts per 100 possessions. Boston on the other hand, is allowing only 90.4 pts per 100 possessions, which is nothing short of incredible. I picked them to win the title this year, and with this start, I have no reason to change my prediction.

11-3-09: Biggest Movers

GOING UP

Danilo Gallinari

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know Gallinari has been lights out from 3pt range, shooting staggering 18-36 from 3pt range over his first 3 games. But that's not the only facet of his game that's improved.

Per 36 mins
21.5 pts (last yr: 14.9)
4.5 reb (last yr: 4.7)
2.5 ast (last yr: 1.3)
5.3 3PM (last yr: 2.8)
1.1 stl (last yr: 1.2)
0.8 blk (last yr: 0.3)
3.1 foul (last yr: 4.2)

21.5 PER (last yr: 13.4)

On top of the increased scoring, he's handling the ball more and setting up his teammates, while not completely embarrassing himself on defense (certainly much better than last year when he was limited by the back injury). He is quickly justifying Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni's faith in him, and we could be looking at the next Stojakovic right here.

Channing Frye

Similar to Gallinari, Frye has been on a three point tear. The difference is he wasn't considered a 3pt threat until this season, but is suddenly challenging Mehmet Okur for the title of best 3pt shooting center in the league.

Per 36 mins
22.1 pts (last yr: 12.7)
6.4 reb (last yr: 6.8)
1.1 ast (last yr: 1.2)
4.9 3PM (last yr: 0.5)
2.3 stl (last yr: 0.8)
0.7 blk (last yr: 0.8)
3.7 foul (last yr: 5.1)
23.9 PER (last yr: 10.0)

Looking forward, Frye obviously won't continue to hit 65% of his threes, and unfortunately, it doesn't seem like he's improved in any other facet of the game - which really limits how much you can pump his rating (threes don't really do much for a center's overall). Still, it's nice that he's added this skill to his repetoire as he was looking like a career backup.

Brandon Jennings

Jennings is offically the favorite for rookie of the year, which is a bit surprising given he's the #10 pick and it's the first week of the season. Let's check out how the players drafted in front of him are doing.

Blake Griffin: Out for 6 weeks, which could take him out of the running.
Hasheem Thabeet: A bench role on a bad team
James Harden: Backing up Thabo Sefolosha
Tyreke Evans: Starting at PG for the Kings, but recently outplayed by Beno Udrih. Jennings top competitor.
Ricky Rubio: Not in the league, obviously.
Jonny Flynn: Starting in Minnesota but will be on a short leash all year with Ramon Sessions lurking.
Stephen Curry: Has played well, but team has lots of depth and a loony coach.
Jordan Hill: Out of the rotation and looking like Mike Sweetney part deux.
Demar DeRozan: Starting in Toronto but production is nothing special.

A couple of these teams may have missed out, but we won't find out for another year or two. Focusing in on this season...

Per 36 mins
20.5 pts
6.0 reb
6.5 ast
1.6 stl
0.0 blk
4.4 turnover
5.5 foul
.516 FG% (8.7M)
.556 3PT% (2.7M)
.667 FT% (2.2M)
21.2 PER

Jennings has been much better than expected, and a lot of that stems from his shooting percentages. Jennings wasn't supposed to be this good a shooter, so kudos to him for putting the work in. I don't think he can keep it up (especially with Michael Redd out) but he'll surely continue to put up the points/reb/ast.

Chris Kaman

Kaman has been a beast in the absence of Blake Griffin (similar to his 2007 season when Elton Brand went down). He was even serenaded with MVP chants by the Clipper loyal. While we won't go that far, let's take a look at Kaman's improvement.

Per 36 mins
20.0 pts (last yr: 14.6)
9.0 reb (last yr: 9.7)
1.2 ast (last yr: 1.8)
0.9 stl (last yr: 0.7)
1.6 blk (last yr: 1.8)
2.5 foul (last year: 3.6)
.600 FG% (last year: .528)

Kaman is scoring much more efficiently despite an increased scoring load. He's worked dilligently on his post game and mid-range jumper, and it's paying off for him. He's even worked on his defense and is playing 40 mpg by staying out of foul trouble.

GOING DOWN
Nate Robinson

Last year Nate took the next step, and really thrived in a run/gun offense. His numbers compared very favorably to guys like Monta Ellis, Jason Terry, and Leandro Barbosa, and made him one of the league's top sixth men. he didn't get the FA contract he wanted though, and I wonder if that's affecting his play.

Per 36 mins
12.2 pts (last yr: 20.7)
4.7 ast (last yr: 4.9)
0.9 stl (last yr: 1.5)
0.5 blk (last yr: 0.1)
2.8 turnover (last yr: 2.3)
5.6 foul (last yr: 3.4)
.286 FG% (last yr: .437)
.200 3PT% (last yr: .200)
9.4 3PA (last yr: 6.3)
2.3 FTA (last yr: 4.8)

The key here is the shot attempts. Nate has ceased driving it in and is content to take every three he can get. The problem here is he is only an average 3pt shooter (at best). His turnovers and fouls are also up, while his steals are down. Overall it is not a good start for the little man, who will also miss the next two weeks with an ankle sprain, and has seen the team thrive after his minutes were taken by Larry Hughes. Yes, THAT Larry Hughes.

CONTRACT TALKS
Adjusted contracts for all 2nd and 3rd year players who had their options declined.
Added Rajon Rondo and LaMarcus Aldridge's contract extensions.

ROTATION, ROTATION, ROTATION
As always, kept the depth chart for all teams up to date. Starting to focus on making all the player roles accurate as 2K has a habit of screwing these up.

Update coming

As soon as 2K Sports fixes their freakin server. It's been down most of the day.

Sunday, November 1, 2009

These close ratings are really bad.

A lot of them just don't make any sense.

M. Bibby
2009: 25-54 (.462)
2008: 11-30 (.366)
2007: 26-64 (.406)
2006: 24-61 (.393)
2005: 31-82 (.378)
Total: 117-291 (.402)

R. Rondo
2009: 32-90 (.355)
2008: 42-103 (.407)
2007: 21-62 (.338)
Total: 95-255 (.372)

P. Stojakovic
2009: 27-80 (.337)
2008: 34-97 (.350)
2007: 8-20 (.400)
2006: 20-75 (.266)
2005: 32-93 (.344)
Total: 121-365 (.331)

B. Wallace
2009: 3-15 (.200)
2008: 13-62 (.209)
2007: 19-69 (.275)
2006: 15-59 (.254)
2005: 21-74 (.283)
Total: 71-279 (.254)

Their close ratings?
Peja: 76
Rondo: 68
Bibby: 50
Wallace: 50

Rondo is pretty clearly better than Peja.
Bibby doesn't average as many shots but his percentage should clearly put him above Ben Wallace.

It seems like any player who didn't get in a certain volume of Close shots automatically got a 50 as every team has multiple players with a 50. That's just stupid and lazy.
